Conference and Research Grants

SATEFL Conference Grants

Going to a conference or a seminar? We may be able to help

The committee of SATEFL offer a number of discretionary conference grants (up to £100 each, subject to availability of funds) to members wishing to attend a conference or seminar related to their work. Grants are normally limited to one per conference and are intended to cover all or part of the conference fee.

All members are eligible and the recipients will be expected to work actively in SATEFL's interests at the conference, attending relevant meetings, making contacts of value to our association, and seeking out partners for future joint ventures. Grant recipients will also be asked to provide detailed feedback to the Committee and to submit written reports for publication in the SATEFL Newsletter.

In offering these grants SATEFL is seeking to facilitate the personal professional development of individual teachers, researchers and trainers. Professional development funded by these grants is to be regarded as an addition to - not a substitute for - professional development funded by institutions to improve their own staffing profile.

Applications should be submitted in writing to the Secretary of SATEFL.

Each application will be considered by the Executive Committee and judged on its
merits.

SATEFL Research Grants

Small grants are available to support classroom-based research conducted individually or collaboratively by SATEFL members.

Classroom research enables teachers to become researchers by observing closely what is occurring in the classroom and then theorising from their own experience. Teacher-researchers formulate their own questions, collect and describe their own data and share the results with other teachers. The principle underlying such research is that teachers can and should play a central role in the creation of new knowledge about teaching and learning.

SATEFL Research Grant

Purpose: To support classroom-based research.

Eligibility: Any SATEFL member(s). Research may be conducted individually or collaboratively.

Criteria: Applications will be evaluated on the basis of:
(1) the clarity of the research question,
(2) the feasibility of the research plan, and
(3) the potential contribution of the project to the teaching and learning of English as a Foreign Language.

Stipulations:
(1) Research must be completed within 12 months of acceptance of the grant.
(2) Award recipients will report on their research findings, either at a SATEFL meeting or at the TESOL Scotland Annual Conference following the completion of the project.
(3) Award recipients will document their research in some form so that a lasting record of the research exists.

Awards will be announced in the SATEFL Newsletter.
