Joint Conference, 15th-17th April 2005, Heriot Watt University, Edinburgh:

New Approaches to Materials Development for Language Learning

Areas of interest might include:

  • how findings from research can be translated into practical teaching materials

  • how raw language data, e.g. from corpora, can be converted into useable materials

  • introducing critical thinking into materials development

  • the influence of new technologies on materials development – e.g. the design of materials for technology-based learning

  • materials and pedagogical approaches which suit both General English and EAP

  • evaluation of materials by researchers, teachers and students

  • materials which follow a method or approach, e.g. materials for non-task-based teaching or for implementing a lexical approach

  • innovative uses for existing materials

  • materials-light teaching, e.g. the Dogme approach

  • what constitutes ‘expertise’ in materials development

BALEAP holds a three-day conference every two years based on a theme central to English for Academic Purposes. This year the conference is being organised jointly with SATEFL and held at the James Watt Conference Centre, Heriot-Watt University.

Theme: New Approaches to Materials Development for Language Learning.

Plenary speakers: Eija Ventola, Brian Tomlinson, Ian McGrath and Peter Grundy

Delegates attending the conference are invited to submit posters describing practical classroom ideas.

The deadline for submission of poster proposals is 25th March 2005.

Please complete the proposal form with name and contact details and a title and brief description of the proposed poster.

Proposals, in the form of an abstract of 250 words, should be submitted on the downloadable proposal form (Microsoft Word format) to:
