Conference Presentation: 'Textbooks, technology and teachers'

Ian McGrathDr McGrath has been involved in TEFL teacher education since 1971, overseas (Turkey 1971-73, The Netherlands 1973-76) and in the UK since then (private language school sector 1976-80; then the universities of Edinburgh 1981-96, Nottingham 1996-99 and 2002- ). Between 1999 and 2002 he was on secondment to the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, where he established a 4-year undergraduate programme in TEFL. In Nottingham, he is Programme Leader for the MA in English Language Teaching.

Ian is well known as a trainer trainer, organising a number of annual symposia for TEFL teacher educators in Edinburgh and lecturing on British Council International Seminars for Teacher Trainers since the early '90s. He has also carried out numerous overseas consultancies for the British Council and other agencies, including the design of a (partly distance-learning) professional development programme for English teachers in China's Radio and TV universities. This latter assignment resulted from his work, in Edinburgh, on the development of distance-learning programmes for both teachers of English and teachers of other foreign languages. He is listed in the Who's Who of experts in distance learning, and is currently involved in the development of e-learning materials for teachers of English in China.
