Closing Remarks

Some examples of questions submitted for the Panel Discussion:

  • V.S. Naipaul has come out quite forcefully against the concept of multiculturalism in Britain. He argues that immigrants must seek to assimilate into their host country and meet it halfway, rather than live in their own way. Does the panel think that the English teaching profession is doing enough to encourage true integration or is language becoming another symbol of difference and division in society?

  • How far does the panel agree that multiculturalism is not achievable in one society; and does the panel agree with the view that it can only result in the fragmentation of society?

  • Apart from increased funding, what measures would the panel like to see to improve provision for community language learning?
